paddle boarding workout

iRocker SUP is more than a paddle board, it’s your floating gym. Not only are the views and relaxation associated with stand up paddle boarding incomparable, there are some crazy good health benefits that’re undeniably better than anything you’ll get in the gym. Although the gym can a great spot for muscle building and cramming in some cardio, it’s not necessarily a go-to for stress relief. From obvious physical benefits to subtler (but just as important) mental health benefits, here are four huge reasons to hit the water the next time you’re craving a good workout:

Work on Your Balance
Unless your gym has a balance beam, most machines like the squat rack and elliptical do very little to improve your center of gravity. Standing upright for an extended period on your inflatable stand up paddle board is a perfect way to strengthen your core, increase focus and improve your performance in everyday tasks. Doing crunches on a dirty gym floor just doesn’t compete with ripples in the water and a cool breeze.

Great for Rehabilitation
By nature, iSUP is a low impact sport. This makes SUPing a great activity for slowly building strength after an injury. The natural body motions used during paddle boarding are gentle on the muscles and joints unlike other physical activities. On the other hand, stand up paddle boarding has incredible mental health benefits that greatly contribute to the healing process after any injury. The calmness of the moving water and soft sounds of nature makes this sport the place for peace and tranquility to recover.

Serious Calorie Burner
Going an average pace on your paddleboard, you’re likely to burn about twice as many calories as what you’d normally burn on a speed walk on the treadmill. To make this news even better, this average paddle pace will burn nearly 450 calories. It’s great, we know. Besides, being able to explore the water with your board (and maybe your kids or dog in tow) is a million times better than stressful repetitive strides on a treadmill.

Get Yourself a Killer Core
Of the countless reasons why paddle boarding has quickly grown in popularity, two of the major reasons have to do with the ease of learning the sport and the amazing abs you’ll start to see. While SUPing you will be quickly strengthening your core muscles (and the nice six-pack is just a bonus!)

Here are a couple of our favorite SUP workouts that you just can’t do in your everyday gym:

Butt Blaster: Position your body into a deep squat on your iRocker with the paddle held above your head. Raise and lower your body off the board using only your toes.

Why we love it: Keeping a squat position while going through this motion is one thing, but doing it successfully while balancing on the water is a whole new challenge for you.

Side Switch: While lying face up grip each side of the board, then raise your legs straight in the air and slowly move them from your left side to the right.

Why we love it: You’re definitely going to give your core a run for its money with this one. It will take some serious skill to avoid falling into the water, and definitely some strong abdominals!

At iRocker, we’re all about finding nontraditional ways to work our bodies and improve our health without having to pay a huge gym membership. Lucky for all of us, iRocker SUPing makes fitness fun and simple for everyone. Whether you want to take your workout to the ocean or the Intracoastal, your inflatable stand up paddle board will have you feeling fit in no time.
